Being told you need a stoma at any age can be a stressful experience, but finding out when you are a teenager and your body already has a heap of other changes to deal with can be particularly tough. So Salts Healthcare has worked with a group of Stoma Care Nurses to put together a useful leaflet that was inspired by teenagers to help them with all aspects of coping with their condition.
Called ‘So you've been told you need a stoma’, the leaflet explains in a positive and reader-friendly way what a stoma is, what it will look like, how it will function and how it may affect you on a day to day basis. It provides suggestions that have come directly from teenagers with stomas such as how to tell your friends, as well as looking at how it might affect you at school, and your involvement in social activities, holidays and relationships. It also features a handy list of contact details that can put you in touch with organisations and groups which can offer help and support.
Senior Product Manager, Maria Clifton said: “When people are told they need to have a stoma they often feel confused and angry because it is something totally alien to them. They may well have heard some of the negative myths attached to having a stoma so the leaflet aims to dispel these myths and to explain that it is something positive that will help them get back to a normal life, after what could have been a long illness, rather than something they need to be afraid of.”
