It may only be about 24 square miles and have a population of just 60,000, but Guernsey nevertheless has its very own thriving Ostomates Support Group of 65 members – more than half of the tiny island's 130 ostomists. Offering support and encouragement to anyone who has had, or is about to undergo, major bladder or bowel surgery, the group plays a vital role in helping them with all aspects of rehabilitation.
One member who plays an active part in the group is Simon De La Mare who had an ileostomy formed four-and-a-half years ago after suffering for ten years with ulcerative colitis. Describing his illness, Simon said: “I tried lots of different drugs, endured many trips to the hospital and eventually the illness started to take over my life. I finally decided to have my bowel removed in its entirety.
“Of course, it wasn't easy; it was an incredibly difficult time for me both mentally and physically. I had asked at the time of the operation to be put in contact with someone who'd already been through it but I was told there was no-one I could talk to. It is a shame as this would have done wonders to ease my concerns but, because of my own experiences, I now offer to talk to anyone about to undergo surgery to help allay their fears and to show that life really does go on.”
Simon continued: “Some time after the operation, I met a man called Dave Allen who was starting a support group for people like me but sadly he died after a long battle with cancer. Before he passed away, he asked me to carry on the work he'd begun with the Guernsey Ostomates and I was honoured to do so.”
Now the group has monthly meetings at St Martins Community Centre, attended by local Stoma Care Nurse, Andrea Musson, where members can openly discuss issues such as managing their ostomies, social activities, relationships and new products and this helps us to make the most of our lives. Some of our members let the fear of leakage or odour prevent them from going out and enjoying themselves,” added Simon, “but it doesn't have to be like this. I've been using Salts' Confidence pouches since the operation and have only once had a problem with them, and that was when the tag got caught on my overalls!”
His ileostomy certainly hasn't prevented Simon from leading a full and active life. “I'm actually doing more now than I ever could when I was suffering with ulcerative colitis,” he said. “I've carried on running my own business as a roofing contractor, which some members find incredible, and I now go out kayaking and fishing as well – something I could never do before as I always had to be close to a toilet. I wish I'd had the operation done sooner. The only thing stopping me was that I didn't have children at the time and I was worried I'd be unable to have them following the operation, so I put it off until I'd had my two wonderful kids, Summer and James.
“My wife Michaela is great and my ostomy has never been an issue for her, we have a normal, intimate relationship and life couldn't be better!”
