Welcome to the Winter Linkline

IntroWelcome to the last edition of Linkline in 2006. Doesn't time fly? It doesn't seem long since we were celebrating Christmas last year and it's almost upon us once again - please remember to check the opening hours of your Medilink branch on page 9 to ensure you are not left without supplies over the festive period.

Our extensive range of accessories forms an important part of our product portfolio and in this issue we are giving you another opportunity to try a free sample of some of our most popular products. These are available on a first come, first served basis so please don't delay in ordering.

I hope you all enjoy the festivities and we'll catch up with you again next year with our regular round up of news from across the UK.

Practice Makes Perfect

APractices part of a collaboration between Salts Healthcare and a group of Stoma Care Nurses based in the Surrey area, patients about to undergo an ileostomy will have the chance to hear from existing patients and to find out, often for the first time, what a real stoma looks like and how it functions.

Members of the Surrey Stoma Care Nurses Group, who meet on a monthly basis to share experiences and ideas, decided to make a DVD which would help patients understand the nature of their operation and how it would affect their day to day lives. Salts was invited to get involved and was delighted to take up the offer.

The DVDs will be distributed to Stoma Care Nurses around the country, for use in their hospitals, but if you are a new ileostomist and feel that the DVD would be of benefit to you, you can request a free copy (while stocks last) by calling Freephone 0800 626388 (Ireland 1-800-408508).

The Surrey Stoma Care Nurses Group members work for:Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, and Epsom and St Helier University NHS Trust.

Cardiff - Before and After

05cardiff Cardiff's Medilink branch is offering an altogether more inviting welcome following the completion of a refurbishment project managed by Senior Customer Care Advisor Sarah Free (known to customers as Lou). Despite working to a tight budget, Sarah, who studied interior design on a course run by Ann Maurice (Channel 4's presenter of 'House Doctor'), has done a fantastic job.

Former Customer Care Advisor at the branch, Suzanne Yarnton was one of the first visitors to check out the new dŽcor. She said the transformation started at the front door: "Having retired in December 2005, I visited the office to see what Sarah had been up to and even the hallway was beautiful. As I progressed through the office rooms, kitchen and loos, I had to say it definitely has the 'wow factor'. The colour scheme is superb and the whole environment is quite tranquil. I wish I was ten years younger and still working there. Well done Sarah!Ó

50 Years celebrated in IA Omnibus

Continuing with its 50th Anniversary celebrations, the ia has published a special omnibus edition of the ia Journal. The Journal Omnibus has many interesting features including popular articles from previous editions of the ia Journal and is a useful reference for those who live with an ileostomy or ileo anal pouch. This edition is dedicated to the memory of Professor Bryan Brooke, MD FRCS and Doreen Harris MBE who were the driving forces behind the formation of the ia in April 1956.

IajournalThe Journal Omnibus can be purchased via the website at www.the-ia.org.uk or from the ia national office at a cost of £5.00 including P+P.

The ia Journal, which is issued quarterly, free to members, provides a vital link between patients, healthcare professionals and the manufacturers of stoma equipment and can be a useful source of information for the general public. Membership of the ia is £12.00 per annum if you are under 60 years of age and £8.00 if you are over 60. You can join online at www.the-ia.org.uk or contact us at national office.

Here's one I made earlier

People rarely stop to think how products they use on a day to day basis are actually made, but a visit to Salts' HQ in Birmingham gave a group of ia members from Leicestershire the opportunity to do just that.

03earlier1When the 25-strong group visited the HQ in September they were introduced to Peter, Philip and Robert Salt (MD, Chief Executive and Export Director), and enjoyed a presentation by Peter, as well as talks by Adrian Priest on the history of the company and by Leicestershire rep Rob Simons, who organised the event. Rob introduced the visitors to new products available from Salts such as Comfizz pants.

They also had a unique opportunity to look round the manufacturing area to see how pouches are made - both by hand and machine Ð and sang ÔHappy Birthday' to Peter after someone let the cat out of the bag about his big day!

Mary Bell, chairperson of the Leicestershire ia, said:

"Everything went very well and everyone enjoyed the day. Everyone we spoke to was happy to stop what they were doing to talk to us about their work and it was really interesting to see all the procedures that are involved in making the products we use. We fired lots of questions and everyone was more than happy to answer them Ð we were made to feel very welcome."

03earlier2 She added, "It is gratifying to know that so much care and thought goes into making these products and this gives us so much confidence to get on with our lives."

Peter Salt commented:

"It was an absolute pleasure to show the ia members round our HQ and we were delighted to hear that they got so much out of it."

Golf Day raises £2000 for Cancer Appeal

A Golf Day, organised by Salts Healthcare this summer, raised a fantastic £2,000 for Nottingham City Hospital's Prostate Cancer Equipment Appeal. Suppliers from across the country were invited to the event with twelve teams playing in total.

04golf Owen Cole, the hospital's Lead Consultant - Urology Cancer, explained the reason for the appeal:

"Prostate cancer can be most effectively treated when in its first stages, so early detection is important. Urology, however, is an expensive specialty because the technologies used evolve very quickly. Our fundraising appeal will enable us to invest in specialised equipment for research into developing new treatments and ways of administering the best possible care and we are grateful to Salts for their contribution."

Positive Experience for Cornish Optimists

Led by Sue Hatton, Chair of the new Colostomy Association, a group of ostomates and their partners - a support group called 'Optimists' as it includes anyone who has a bag or pouch - visited Medilink in Redruth and were given, as Sue said, "a fascinating insight into the home delivery system that we 'patients' take for granted."

Cornwall2 Reporting on the visit, Sue continued: "Linda Congdon who heads the team in Redruth, gave us a brilliant talk. She described how a new ostomate is measured up for their pouch by the Stoma Care Nurse - the team has a close relationship with our Stoma Care Nurses in Treliske Hospital in Truro - the template is taken and a prescription is sent to Salts who keep all the patient's details. They then phone through to the relevant stoma care supplier and once the goods are received (generally within 24hrs), the team leaps into action, sometimes cutting the holes themselves, pack up the supplies (very discreetly) and navigate their way to our homes with our box of goodies which can be left in a prearranged location. We have some very tricky routes here in Cornwall, and the team have to be good map readers!

"Linda told us how they keep supplies for emergencies as there are times when patients have had problems and run out of their pouches. Medilink will always come out with some spares if a patient is distressed or concerned. Indeed, one of the Optimists mentioned that the Medilink team came to her rescue when she ran out of pouches while on holiday in France, quickly sending new pouches out to her.

Cornwall1 "The team also has a wealth of knowledge of skin problems and will advise on the best sprays, wipes, deodorants, etc. We were able to see some new supplies, try sprays and had a hilarious time discussing all our different methods of coping with bag changing and leakage problems. We all appreciate having the choice of where our supplies come from and value independence and there is never any pressure from Salts to use their own supplies - no hard sell - just a very professional, competent service.

"As we were leaving, one of our members whispered to me that she used another very good supplier - 'Medilink' - we both hooted with laughter when I explained that Salts and Salts Medilink were a service provided by the same company!

"Our thanks to Linda, Anne, Debbie and Gill for their unfailing help to all of us and for allowing us to bombard their offices!"
